You've probably built your study timetable this way without even thinking about it. Monday is Maths. Tuesday is Chemistry. Wednesday is English. Each subject gets its own dedicated block, and within that block you drill the same type of problem over and over until it feels automatic. That sense of automatic ease is exactly the trap.
Interleaving means mixing different topics or problem types within a single study session, instead of mastering one before moving to the next. Instead of doing twenty quadratic equation problems in a row, you'd mix quadratics, trigonometry, and calculus problems in the same session, switching between them every few questions instead of grinding through one type at a time.
It feels harder. It feels slower. It feels like you're worse at the subject than you actually are. That discomfort is the entire point, and it's also why almost nobody does this voluntarily.
When you block practice, your brain can coast. Once you've done the first two quadratic problems, you don't have to think about which method applies - you just repeat whatever you did last time. That's not learning, that's pattern matching to the last five minutes of repetition. Your brain isn't being asked to make a decision, it's just executing a routine, and routines don't build the kind of flexible understanding you need on exam day when problems don't announce which chapter they came from.
Interleaving forces your brain to do something blocked practice never does: retrieve which strategy applies before you can even start solving the problem. That extra step - working out what kind of problem this actually is - is where the real learning happens. Researchers call this the discrimination benefit, and it's why interleaved practice consistently beats blocked practice on delayed tests, even though it feels considerably worse in the moment you're doing it.
This is the same illusion that makes re-reading notes feel productive when active recall isn't. Ease of practice is not the same thing as quality of learning, and in fact the two are often inversely related. The study methods that feel best while you're doing them are frequently the ones that leave the least behind a week later.
Start by mixing within a single subject before you try mixing across subjects. If you're studying Maths, don't do fifteen problems from one topic in a row. Pull five questions from three different topics you've already covered and shuffle the order so you genuinely don't know what's coming next. The unpredictability is doing the work.
Once that feels manageable, you can mix across subjects too, particularly if you're studying a mix of essay-based and problem-based subjects. Alternating between something like English and Maths can actually reduce mental fatigue while still forcing your brain to keep switching gears, which is where the benefit comes from.
One important caveat: don't interleave brand new material. Interleaving is a retrieval and discrimination tool, not a first-encounter tool. If you've never seen a concept before, learn it in isolation first, get comfortable with the basic method, and only then start folding it into an interleaved review session alongside older material.
It also pairs naturally with spaced repetition, and honestly the two techniques were built for each other. Spacing determines when you review something. Interleaving determines what you review in that session once you sit down. Used together, they cover both the timing problem and the depth problem that most study timetables never solve.
Interleaved practice sessions feel worse while you're in them. You'll get more questions wrong. You'll feel less confident walking out of the session than you would after a blocked one. This isn't a sign you're doing it wrong - it's actually a documented and consistent finding: students who interleave rate their own learning lower than students who block, and then go on to outperform them on the actual exam a week or two later.
If you're chasing the feeling of mastery in the moment, blocked practice will always win that comparison. It's more comfortable, more confidence-boosting, and much easier to stick with. But if you're chasing the mark on exam day rather than the feeling on a Tuesday night, interleaving wins every time, even though almost nothing about doing it will feel like winning until the results come back.
